ELM327 OBD2 Adapter: The Clone Wars

Most “Dr. Prius won’t connect” issues come down to low-quality ELM327 clones. Hybrid-specific apps often require features (like switching ECU headers) that generic apps don’t. Browse the tested adapters below — and use search to quickly find a model.

PS: Most adapters are Android-only. iOS users typically need BLE-compatible adapters. (See notes inside each card.)
Tools/apps used for testing
  • ELM327 Identifier
  • Elm327 OBD Terminal
  • Dr. Prius App
  • Hybrid Assistant App
  • Torque App
Quick guidance
  • If it “works in Torque” it still may fail in Dr. Prius.
  • Avoid mystery “Mini ELM327” listings with inconsistent internals.
  • Prefer known BLE adapters for iOS.

Mini Junk

Packaged nicely but not usable for hybrid battery data. Doesn’t reliably switch between ECUs on iOS/Android.

Looks like it can switch ECUs, but fails to retrieve battery-related data on Gen2/Gen3.

Mother of all Junks

Extremely common cheap clone. Unreliable even for basic commands; won’t work for Dr. Prius.

Works, but flaky

OBD2 mini with ON/OFF switch

Sort-of works but tends to lose connection and returns incomplete payload data. Not recommended.

Good first impression, but has a bug that prevents consistent data. Can miss DTC data.

Works only with its proprietary app/protocols (not ELM327 compatible).

Innova 1000

Pairs and connects, but lacks (or is too slow for) AT SH support, making it unusable here.

Fast, but complicated

OBDLink LX / MX

Very fast, but iOS support can be confusing (often classic BT, not BLE).
